About the Sony PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 games console was launched at the E3 entertainment show in May 2005 and went on general sale in November of that year. A revised, Slim PS3 was released for sale on 1 September 2009.

Processing Power

The core component of the original and the PS3 Slim is its Cell Processor, jointly developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba. This unit gives the console over thirty times the power of the PS2. The graphics side of the console is provided by gaming giant NVidia. The chip employed is closely based on the GeForce 7800 range of graphic cards but uses the name RSX (standing for Reality Synthesizer) in the PS3 application. The chip runs at a frequency of 550 MHz and employs 256MB of GDDR3 RAM.

Optical Storage

The PS3 contains an integrated 2.5 inch laptop-style hard disk drive for partial game installs, saved games and download material. The size of this hard drive ranges from 20GB to 160GB depending on the actual PS3 version. The current slim PS3's have either 120GB or 250GB hard drives. It is very easy to upgrade the hard drive, with the maximum available size 500GB at the moment. One of the major features of the PS3 is its built in Blu-ray disk drive providing the opportunity to watch the latest high definition movies. A Blu-ray remote control is also available to buy as an extra in lieu of using the game controllers.

Control System

The PS3 controllers, although looking similar to these of the PS2, are actually wireless (using a Bluetooth wireless connection system) and rechargeable items and allow up to seven players to use one console. The DualShock rumble feature found on the PS2 was not available at launch but now some licensing issues have been resolved this is now a standard feature.

Online Gaming

The PS3 console can be connected to the internet using either a cable-based Ethernet connection or the integrated wireless connectivity. Online gaming is conducted through Sony's PlayStation Network portal which is free to registered users, unlike Microsoft's Xbox Live alternative.

Other Features

The PS3 features numerous USB2 ports (up to six depending on model), an HDMI connection providing up to a 1920 x 1080p picture and an optical audio connection. The HDMI connection can also carry the audio signal providing the TV, amplifier or processor being used is capable of receiving it. The console has been available in black, silver or white, although only black is available in the European and North American markets.

Summary

The Sony PlayStation Three is a major advance on the previous PlayStation console. It has an integrated hard drive, Blu-ray drive, wireless controllers and integrated wireless connectivity, non of which were present on the PS2. The PS3 represents the very latest in games console technology. Visit the link to get your free PS3 250GB.
